Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, millions of innocent people have been displaced, and thousands have been killed or injured. This war has led to serious human rights violations, including the targeting of civilian areas, the forced deportation of Ukrainian children, and the widespread destruction of many homes and infrastructure. For our human rights project, we decided to create a social media campaign in order to raise awareness of what is happening in Ukraine so that international actors are pressured to take action. We hope to highlight key facts, explain the legal and humanitarian implications, and promote ways that people across the globe can support Ukrainian civilians during this ongoing crisis.
Ukraine Justice Watch focuses on educating social media viewers about the different forms of violence and rights violations taking place. These include attacks on hospitals and schools, use of torture, and the separation of children from their families, which all violate the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). For instance, the forced deportation and transfer of Ukrainian Children to Russia is a clear violation of Article 8 of the Rome Statute, which defines forced transfer of children as a genocidal act. Civilians are also being harmed by the destruction of critical infrastructure such as electricity and water systems, leaving many in unsafe conditions with limited access to basic necessities.
Another key part of our campaign is highlighting the work of humanitarian and legal organizations that are actively responding to the crisis in Ukraine. These institutions play a critical role in protecting civilians, supporting displaced families, and seeking justice for victims of war crimes. One of the organizations that we raise support for is HIAS, which provides displaced people with essential resources such as housing, legal aid, and emergency assistance. Their work is especially important for vulnerable populations facing great risk during conflict. Another focus is on the efforts of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is investigating evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine. Their involvement shows that the international community is watching and that there are many different mechanisms that are set in place to hold perpetrators accountable. In order to make it easier for our audience to take action, we have included direct links to petitions calling for justice, donation platforms that support humanitarian aid, and education sources explaining what is happening in real time. By showing both the damage caused by the war and the people who work to help, we aim to provide information, as well as compassion and hope to those suffering in Ukraine.
This project matters because the human rights violations that are taking place in Ukraine are not isolated incidents and raise important questions about the effectiveness of global systems that are designed to protect civilians during wartime. When powerful nations commit war crimes without facing any consequences, it undermines international law and weakens basic human rights protections that should apply to all people, everywhere. Our goal for this campaign is not just to post statistics or headlines, but to create a meaningful and respectful space where people are able to engage with current human rights violations happening in Ukraine. Whether it is donating a few dollars, sharing a story, or starting a conversation with a friend, all of these actions add up. They help keep Ukraine in the global eye and build pressure for real change. The path to justice may be a long one, but it begins with awareness. This awareness starts with all of us using our online platforms to speak up.
